something out of nothing?
Yesterday I went running along the shore with Jamie and Susannie. I'm trying to get ready for the 5K Liver Run I'm doing this Saturday. I haven't gone running outside in a while...I forgot how nice it was by the water. I don't think I could live somewhere that isn't by the water. It's calming, refreshing, and beautiful! The bay area is great! I'm gonna try going again tomorrow...let's see how that goes. I get out of class pretty late though. =(
So, while I was running I wasn't thinking about random stuff...well not really random...just how I related things together I guess. In my seminar class monday night, the topic was dealing with conflict and the different ways people respond to it. There's basically three types or responses - passive, assertive, and facilitative. A passive response is doing nothing, including ignoring, walking away, smoothing things over, or withdrawing. An assertive response would be confronting the person or standing firm. With confrontation, it only works best if there is a good relationship to begin with. And it's also very risky - the risk of destroying the relationship, meaning that things can blow up. Facilitative responses are compromising and negotiating. I guess what stuck out to me was the confrontation part. It is really important to confront someone when there is a conflict. But the two parties have to be adult about it...has to care enough about the matter to take that risk and do something about it. And it takes two! This can't happen in a logical matter if it's only coming from one side or one person is on a different level. Confrontation is risky but can have a good end result if both parties are willing. I guess this is the part that I'm missing. When was there ever a confrontation? But when was there ever a conflict??? Was I just not getting something. I'm the type of person that doesn't like to make something out of nothing.
And this made me think of what we learned in science class. I did a presentation on the particle theory of matter. There's particles in the air, but what is the space between the particles? Many students have the notion that there is no such thing as 'nothing'. When students in this video were asked this question, they couldn't answer it because they couldn't accept the fact of 'nothing'. In school, we are always taught that there is something in nothing. For example, when we learn about molecules, atoms, or the cytoplasm in a cell. There is always something there...even though we can't see it. But the concept of 'nothing' does exist. Between the particles in the air, there is nothing...it's just space.
I don't like to create something out of nothing.
There is always something in nothing.
Was there nothing? bc there is such a thing as nothing.
