Police Investigate Richmond School Shooting
Aug. 28 - BCN - The Richmond Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred in the vicinity of an elementary school in Richmond today.
Officers responded to reports at approximately 12:28 p.m. of two vehicles exchanging gunfire on the east side of Nystrom Elementary school in Richmond, Richmond police lieutenant Mark Gagan said.
Several rounds were fired, two of which hit the campus. One round reportedly hit a classroom with four students and three teachers inside, while the other hit the playground adjacent to the classroom.
Approximately 250 to 275 children were on the playground at the time of the shooting, Gagan said. No injuries were reported.
The campus enacted a "shelter in place" that was not lifted until public officials arrived on the scene.
Investigators have yet to identify suspects or a motive for the shooting.
"Today is the first day of school and we are outraged by the blatant disregard for our children's and our community's safety," Gagan said.
Nystrom Elementary School is located at 230 Harbour Way S. in Richmond.
